Overseas - Wetherby League

Marcus Cobbledick (2000) Melbourne, Australia

The ladies favourite amongst the overseas players.
Marcus arrived as part of a ‘double deal’ with John Huddart (see below) in 2001 and was part of our first Fred Fleetwood Cup winning side.

As quick as any bowler in the league on his day, he also contributed some important runs coming in low down the order, especially with his flick through square-leg which never failed to annoy the bowler.
Also a tremendous cover-point and deep fielder with a great pair of hands.

John Huddart (2000 & 2003)
Melbourne, Australia (Not officially classed as an overseas due to an English passport, however as he classes Melbourne as home we will include him in here!).

John was a right arm fast medium bowler, opener/number 3 batsman and also an excellent slip fielder.

After a successful first season with the club, we were disappointed to lose John to top Central Yorkshire League side, Townville CC for the 2002 season. He returned during the 2003 season where his he was a key component in our ‘treble’ triumph, particularly with his batting.

Probably his most memorable performance was during the Champions Trophy quarter-final tie with Kirkburton, where his 40 and 3-25 from 10 overs (including the key wickets of
Yorkshire opener Scott Richardson and former Durham all-rounder Ryan Robinson) set up a famous victory.

Unfortunately he had to return to
Australia for personal reasons prior to the semi-final with Harrogate CC and missed the final few league games of the season but still managed to pick up.

Chamath Jayaweera (2001) Melbourne, Australia

Born in
Sri Lanka, Chumma moved to Australia as a child. A Left handed opener or number 3 batsman who bowled occasional left arm medium pace. Will probably be best remembered for his century against local rivals Kippax in a victory which helped to secure our Division 1 status.

Danny Ward (2002 and 2003) Melbourne, Australia

Danny arrived as a right arm fast bowler and genuine number 11 batsman, however his batting did improve during his 2 year spell at the club and he now regularly bats 9 or 10 for his club Glenroy CC.
He was the overseas player during our most successful spell of recent years.

That success was in no small part due to the new ball partnership which Danny struck up with another new arrival at the club, Mick Roberts.
Had a knack of taking early wickets, including one with his very first ball in England, away at Whixley. Also a good death bowler and the one skipper Newton turned to when we needed a wicket.

Another who made a massive contribution to the victory over Kirkburton in the Champions Trophy, holding his nerve to bowl the penultimate over for just four runs to ensure that the visitors required 7 from the final over.

Danny is related through marriage to actor Ian Smith (Harold Bishop in neighbours) and also appeared in Prisoner Cell Block H as a child.

John Midwinter (2004) Melbourne, Australia John joined the club in 2004 after a spell with Crigglestone CC in the Central Yorkshire League.  A bowling all-rounder, John arrived as an opening bowler and middle order batsman, but often found himself at the top of the order where he made some significant contributions.  A descendant of William Evans Midwinter who played four Test matches for England, sandwiched in between eight Tests that he played for Australia. Midwinter holds a unique place in cricket history as the only cricketer to have played for Australia and England in Test Matches against each other.

Mohammed Nawaz (2005) Faisalabad, Pakistan

Nawaz, having settled in this country and now qualifying to play as a non overseas player through residency, returned to the club for a season in 2005.

Won the league batting averages and was instrumental in Fleetwood Cup and Evening League success.

Matty Love (2005) Melbourne, Australia

Came over with a reputation as a left arm seam bowler who could bat a bit and ended up being a revelation with the bat as well as contributing with the ball.  Came second in the league batting averages behind Nawaz and helped Preston win the Fleetwood Cup for the third time and evening cup for the fourth year in succession

Ash Bradshaw (2006) Melbourne, Australia

Hard hitting opening batsmen who made oodles of runs by taking the
attack to the opposition.  Usually got himself out (rather than the opposition) when boredom set in.  Good fielder who chipped in with some useful wickets with his gentle medium pace
