Overseas - Leeds League

Great Preston Cricket Club has had its share of overseas players.  All visiting players have proved excellent recruits both on and off the field and it is hoped the flow of such players will continue.  A great advantage in bringing the best out of these young men has been the base in the village where they have been ‘housed’.  Anne and Alan Dickinson have served the club outstandingly in this respect.

This page provides a little information on each of the overseas players who played for the club during our time in the Leeds League:

Darren Curtis (1992 and 1993) from Melbourne, Australia

The first of our overseas players, Darren was a right handed batsman and occasional left arm medium pace bowler.

A key part of our run to the Hepworth Cup Final in 1993, where we were eventually beaten by a strong Woodhouse side.

Stuart Giles (1994 & 1997) from Melbourne, Australia

Stuart was a right handed top order batsman and off-spin bowler from Ringwood CC in Melbourne. Had a good cricketing brain and led the side on a number of occasions during his two spells at the club.

Great character both on and off the field.

Jason Evans (1995) from Melbourne, Australia

Arrived at Berry Lane from Ringwood CC with a big reputation and showed glimpses of his talent in the handful of games he played for the club. Unfortunately we didnt see enough of Jason as he returned to Oz due to home-sickness.

Ronnie Kotkamp (1996) from Dunedin, New Zealand

Probably the most talented of our overseas players, Ronnie was a right arm quick bowler who formed a formidable opening partnership with Kev Roberts. He took over 70 wickets and was instrumental in our second place finish in the league and Hepworth Cup win over local rivals Carlton CC.

Moved to Wimbledon CC in 1997 and has made a big impact in his time in the Surrey Championship (where he still plays), so much so that he has had trials with Surrey and Northants and has represented MCC on a regular basis, including the 2007 tour to PNG which included Geraint Jones.

Mohammad Nawaz (1999) from Faisalabad, Pakistan

Nawaz was one of an exciting crop of Pakistani overseas players who played in the Leeds League in 1998 (others included Sarfraz Ahmed who now plays for Woodlands and Azhar Abbas, who took 100 wickets before heading to Baildon)

He originally arrived as a top order batsman but it was his abilities with the ball that created the biggest impact during his first season at the club. An off-spin bowler with great control and the ability to turn the ball big.Often opened the bowling during that season, bowling unchanged and very rarely conceding more than 3 runs per over.

Moved to Cookridge CC the following season and managed to tempt his good friend Inzamam Ul-Haq to play in his end of season benefit game.
